Idrac Failed to Initialize R720 Warning Idrac Initialization Error Continuing to Boot May Yield

NAFAIK.

They have their own IP address (separate from the server) at which there is a web interface where you can talk to it, a little.

When the server is booting you should see a screen for accessing the iDRAC card.  I think it is limited to what you can do but one of the things is to assign an IP address.  Then you can plug a cable into it and manage it from a web browser.

This happens when Idrac has not run full inventory. Please see below how to fix it.

Then Turnoff the server completely take all power out and then power on. Then Run Firmware update for IDrac and it should be all good. Otherwise the last option is to remove the DRAC from the server motherboard and that's it.

The iDRAC is not responding at all if I pull it out all together it responds in the same way, says that it is initializing then fails  to initialize then reboots with the fans going full speed.  I was hoping that there was a setting to tell the server not to look for it upon boot up.

The iDRAC won't cause the fans to go at full speed, it doesn't have any control over them (that I'm aware of anyway). The CPU fans should be controlled by the power management of the BIOS.

is the server under warranty?

In my experience the DRAC does cause the Fans on the motherboard to go on high speed because of firmware or failure to initialize. Another thing to check is the cover sensor and see if it is not damaged, the power supply detection and check that both power supplies are plugged in and do not have any failures. Otherwise as Gary noted you might want to check on the warranty.

See more details below:

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/3464.troubleshooting-idrac6-issues

INFORMATION:
Initialization errors during POST

(This issue is normally noticed when fan is running full speed or iDRAC communication error)

1. First, try to reset iDRAC using "racadm racreset"

2. Try to do an iDRAC reset to default using any of the following:

a)     racadm racresetcfg (No host reboot required)

b)     During POST enter CTRL+E option and execute Reset to default (Host reboot is required )

3. After reset to default is completed, reconfigure iDRAC settings (LAN config, IPMI over LAN etc.)

4. If the above fails, try draining flea power by unplugging the server from power source and then holding power button down for 20 seconds. Got to step 1 again and try

5. If using AMEA, ensure that iDRAC express card is also installed

6. Try BIOS/Firmware / Software update

7. Replace parts

Fair enough, this isn't something I've ever seen but then I've only had iDRAC issues on the older servers, those that didn't have the iDRAC built into the motherboard but on a little riser card.

Also to be fair I have more issues on DRAC with the PowerEdge T series with older DRAC but even a momth ago I had an issue with the PowerEdge T430 of a customer with newed DRAC, I wish it wasn't as common for me. Maybe I will just use the Rack servers and not towers. My last problem with a Rack server was the Dell r610 with DRac6

^This is the only way I know of to disable it :)
